The Hantangang Tourist Area, which stretches 1.5km along the river between Hantangyo Bridge and Saranggyo Bridge in Jeongok-ri, Jeongok-eup, Yeoncheon-gun, was officially designated as a tourist destination in March 1977. In 1996, 1999, and 2000, the Hantangang River flooded and lost its function as a tourist destination. But it was reborn as an eco-friendly cultural and recreation tourist destination for families in conjunction with the prehistoric site maintenance and historic and cultural village creation projects that began in 2005.

The Hantangang River, which rises in Pyonggang-gun in North Korea, is the best place for tourists who find it difficult to travel to volcanic islands such as Jeju Island to observe the characteristics of a volcanic region, as the place is home to columnar joints and waterfalls created by volcanic activities in the Diluvian Age along the river. The Hantangang Tourist Area, which has been created against the backdrop of the beautiful Hantangang River, is gaining great popularity from family-unit tourists due to its wide variety of facilities, such as camping facilities that satisfy international standards for the first time in Korea (log cabins, caravans, auto campgrounds), water playgrounds, soccer fields, and a character park for children. It continues to be a fun vacation spot where many tourists each visit year as the largest waterside tourist destination in the northern part of the Seoul Metropolitan Area.
