Yeoncheon Imjin River Biosphere Reserve

Geopark

Major geological attractions in the core area and buffer zone of the Yeoncheon Imjin River Biosphere Reserve were certified as the "Hantangang UNESCO Global Geopark" in 2020. The Hantangang is a UNESCO Global Geopark, which was the first one to be composed around a river in Korea, which has been recognized for its geological excellence throughout the world. After the Hantan and Imjin River National Geopark (Yeoncheon and Pocheon) was certified in 2015, the area was officially announced as the Hantangang National Geopark (including Chelwon), and it was certified as the Hantangnag UNESCO Global Geopark in 2020.

Yeoncheon-gun, Pocheon-gun and Cheorwon-gun were certified together for the Hantangang UNESCO Global Geopark. A total of 26 geological attractions were selected, including the Hantan River and the junction area of the Imjin River, which is located down the Hantan River, and among them, a total of 10 geological attractions are located in Yeoncheon-gun.

The Imjin River and Hantan River boast diverse and beautiful terrain and sceneries, including columnar joints and waterfalls, due to the volcanic eruption in Pyeonggang region of North Korea at the end of the Cenozoic Era and the erosion of the lava plateau. In particular, the columnar joint cliff, red cliff, and pillow lava in Yeoncheon-gun created at that time are the only ones in Korea developed along inland rivers, and thus, have a very high geological value. The geotrails of "Yeongangnaru-gil, Chatancheon Eum-gil, Imjinjeokbyeok-gil, and Hapsumeoriggokji-gil" have been created along the river for trekkers to explore the geological attractions.
