    Core Area 6,369ha 11% Imjin River, Hantan River, Chatan Stream, forest genetic resource protection forest around the rivers north of the civilian limit line, ecological nature around the rivers north of the civilian limit line and grade 1 areas in the National Environment Evaluation, water source protection zones of conserved mountains, cultural heritage protection areas designated by the state (Sunguijeonji; Tomb of King Gyeongsun, Archaeological Site in Jeongok-ri, Horogoruseong Fortress, Dangposeong Fortress, Water Spider Habitat), etc.
    Buffer Zone 20,810ha 36% 100m around Godaesan Mountain, Imjin River, Hantan River, and Chatancheon Stream, conserved mountains other than those in the core area, cultural heritage protection zones designated by the city and province (Stone Mound Tomb in Hakgok-ri, Ddolmens in Hakgok-ri, Stone Mound Tomb in Samgot-ri), Gunnam Dam, and submerged area of Hantangang Dam

  • The entire area of Yeoncheon-gun has been designated as a biosphere reserve around the Imjin River and the Hantan River flowing across the region.
  • Due to reduced human activity, various creatures such as cranes, cyprinid fish, and water spiders have arrived and inhabited in the Imjin River, which had served as an important foundation for life throughout the history of the Korean Peninsula.
  • It is the first biosphere reserve in Korea to be designated around a river. It was the 7th biosphere reserve in Korea, and the 4th time that the entire area was designated as a biosphere reserve in Korea.
